Workshop description
What you'll learn
This workshop focuses on painting the figure in a natural, bright setting, using cast shadows, such as those of trees, as a central compositional element. Students will work from selected references and complete a single painting from start to finish, exploring how light and texture can shape both atmosphere and narrative.

Reference image
The instructor prefers not to share references online. Each participant will therefore receive a high-quality printed reference image upon arrival at the workshop.
Program
Day 1
Basic Drawing and Painting: Focus on Composition, Proportions, and Value Structure
Day 2
Developing the Figure and Refining Details
Day 3
Background, Atmosphere, and Finishing Touches: Working on Edges, Harmony, and Finishing Touches
Extra services
To make the workshop experience even more immersive, the artist will be joined by his wife, artist Anhelina Holembivska, who will assist him during the sessions, offering guidance and support.
Andrii will also collaborate with Michael Harding to provide each participant with a small set of four 15 ml professional oil paints. (Subject to confirmation and availability.)
We will also provide a printed booklet for each student. It will include a detailed description of the process, reference images, and notes on the materials to support post-workshop learning.
The artist
Andrii Kateryniuk

Andrii Kateryniuk (born 1994 in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine) is a contemporary painter who lives and works in Florence. Working primarily with traditional oil paint, Kateryniuk is best known for his figurative and landscape paintings.
His practice is rooted in classical training and is deeply influenced by Western tradition, particularly 19th-century academic painting. Combining meticulous craftsmanship with a focus on light and atmosphere, his works evoke a quiet sense of reflection and emotional depth. Whether depicting a lone figure or a sunlit forest, each work invites the viewer into a contemplative space shaped by shadow and silence.
Kateryniuk is represented by Arcadia Contemporary Gallery in New York. His works have been exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Mall Galleries in London, at the LA Art Show at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and are part of the permanent collections of the New Salem Museum and the Art Renewal Center.
